Why Do EV Batteries Need Walk-In Environmental Chambers?

Sep 05 2026
Table of Content [Hide]

EV battery packs experience extreme temperature changes throughout their service life—from winter cold starts to high-temperature fast charging. While cell-level testing is essential, it cannot fully reproduce the complex thermal behavior of a complete battery pack, such as uneven temperature distribution, cooling system response, or connector stress.

Standard laboratory chambers often lack the space required to accommodate full-size EV battery packs together with external cooling systems, high-voltage cables, sensors, and test fixtures. A walk-in environmental chamber provides a controlled, large-scale test space for evaluating complete battery systems under repeatable environmental conditions.

LIB Industry Solution: Walk-In Environmental Chamber for EV Batteries

LIB industry provides walk-in environmental chambers engineered for oversized test specimens such as EV battery packs and modules. The chamber combines precise temperature and humidity control with flexible pack-level integration.

Battery cyclers, liquid cooling systems, CAN communication, data acquisition equipment, and other test systems can be integrated while the battery remains securely positioned inside the chamber.

    Supported EV Battery Test Applications

The exact test profile depends on the battery chemistry, structural design, application, and applicable standards, including IEC 62660, ISO 12405, UN 38.3, IEC 60068, SAE J2464, and UL 2580.

    Test Type

    What It Evaluates

    High/Low Temperature

Battery operation, power limits, and BMS response under temperature extremes.

    Temperature Cycling

Expansion and contraction, seals, connections, and temperature distribution.

    Temperature-Humidity Testing

Moisture ingress, insulation resistance, seal integrity, and electronic component performance.

    Long-Duration Environmental Aging

Capacity loss, internal resistance changes, and cooling performance degradation over time.

    Charge/Discharge Testing

Heat generation, power derating, hot spots, and cooling efficiency under realistic electrical loads.

Integrated Safety Engineering for Battery Testing

Environmental control and battery safety must be engineered together. A standard climate chamber is not automatically designed to handle a battery thermal runaway event.

When testing involves the potential for fire, smoke, rapid gas release, or pressure buildup, dedicated safety systems should be considered according to the battery energy level and test severity.

LIB industry can integrate safety functions such as:

    • Independent over-temperature protection and emergency stop systems

    • Smoke and combustible gas detection with remote monitoring

    • Door safety interlocks and pressure relief systems

    • Emergency forced exhaust systems

    • Fire suppression system interfaces

    • Electrical protection and safe-routing ports for high-voltage cables

These functions can be configured as part of the overall chamber design rather than added after installation.
