Why Standard Temperature Test Chambers Are Not Enough

While standard temperature chambers are suitable for most laboratory testing scenarios, certain applications involve unique risks and physical constraints that require tailored solutions.

    In cases where:

    • Test samples are extremely heavy

    • Internal pressure may rapidly increase

    • Explosion risks cannot be ignored

a standard chamber simply cannot ensure safety or performance.

This is where custom temperature test chambers from LIB industry play a vital role—transforming conventional equipment into application-specific testing systems.

Project Background: Deep-Sea Oil Drum Testing

In April 2021, LIB industry received a request from a customer seeking a temperature test chamber for deep-sea oil drum testing.

Unlike typical test specimens, deep-sea oil drums present a combination of extreme challenges. Under high and low temperature conditions, the oil inside the drum can expand significantly, creating internal pressure. In worst-case scenarios, this may lead to expansion-related rupture or even explosion.

To mitigate this risk, the customer had already prepared an external steel explosion-proof chamber to protect the surrounding environment. However, integrating this safety system with a temperature test chamber required advanced engineering and customization.

    Key Challenges in the Project

    1. Explosion Risk Under Thermal Conditions

Temperature fluctuations could cause internal pressure buildup in the oil drum, posing a serious explosion hazard.

    2. Rapid Pressure Increase Inside the Chamber

If an incident occurred, pressure inside the chamber could rise suddenly, requiring an effective pressure relief mechanism.

    3. Ultra-Heavy Test Specimen (2 Tons)

The oil drum weighed up to 2 tons, making it extremely difficult to load using conventional chamber designs.

LIB Industry Customized Temperature Test Chamber Solution

To address these challenges, LIB industry developed a fully customized solution based on close collaboration with the customer.

    1. Integrated Pressure Relief System

To ensure safety during testing, LIB industry designed eight pressure relief openings on the side of the temperature test chamber.

These openings were connected to the external explosion-proof chamber through pressure pipelines, allowing rapid release of internal pressure in case of expansion or rupture.

This design effectively transformed the chamber into a safety-integrated temperature testing system, significantly reducing operational risks.

    2. Top Skylight Design for Heavy Load Handling

Considering the 2-ton weight of the oil drum, traditional front-loading methods were not feasible.

LIB industry introduced a top skylight structure, enabling the oil drum to be placed into the chamber using lifting equipment.

This design not only ensured safe handling but also greatly improved loading efficiency for oversized and heavy specimens.

    3. Fully Customized Structural Engineering

Every aspect of the chamber—from opening positions to structural layout—was carefully designed based on the customer's specific testing environment.

LIB industry worked closely with the customer throughout the process, discussing feasibility, refining the design, and ensuring seamless integration with external safety systems.

This project highlights LIB industry’s capability to deliver fully customized temperature test chambers tailored to complex and high-risk applications.
